The old man moved before he reached it.
He did not attack.
He simply stepped sideways, caught the man’s wrist, and redirected his momentum into the edge of the table.
The man stumbled, struck the wood with his hip, and dropped to one knee in surprise.
The movement was controlled, practiced, and much faster than any of them expected.
The second man grabbed the old man from behind.
The old man lowered his weight, turned sharply, and trapped the man’s arm against his shoulder.
A second later, the intruder found himself bent over the chair with no safe direction in which to move.
“Let go!”
“Stand still,” the old man said.
“You are making this worse.”
The leader pulled a heavy object from inside his coat.
The old man released the second man and stepped back.
For one dangerous moment, no one moved.
The leader held the object low beside his leg, his face twisted with fury.
“You planned this.”
“No,” the old man replied.
“You planned it.
I only let you explain the plan clearly.”
A distant siren broke the silence.
The leader looked toward the window.
Blue light flickered faintly against the curtain.
The third man recovered and rushed to the back of the house.
He pulled open the kitchen door, only to find the yard beyond illuminated by headlights.
Voices ordered him to stop.
He slammed the door shut.
“They’re outside.”
The second man stared at the broken phone on the floor.
“How did they get here so quickly?”
The old man straightened his leather jacket.
“When your friend grabbed my collar at the door, I pressed the emergency button in my pocket.
The call began before you entered.”
The leader looked at the jacket he had mocked only minutes earlier.
A small transmitter was clipped inside the lining.
“You invited us in to delay us.”
“I invited you in because threats spoken clearly are easier to prove than threats shouted from a gate.”
The sirens stopped outside.
Doors slammed.
Boots moved across the yard.
The leader’s confidence finally broke.
He grabbed the old man’s folder and tore the first report in half.
“There.
No evidence.”
The old man watched the pieces fall.
“That is a copy.”
The leader swept the prepared transfer papers from the table.
“These mean nothing.”
“They have your fingerprints on them.
They also contain a false witness, a fraudulent price, and a statement you just admitted was untrue.”
The second man backed toward the wall.
“We didn’t do anything.
We came for tea.”
The old man glanced at the shattered phone.
“You described the entire crime to an emergency operator.”
A hard knock struck the front door.
“Open the door and step away.”
