“All right, Ms.
Carter.
I’m putting your statement in the report.”
I sat on the edge of my bed with the phone pressed against my ear, staring at the wall as if it might explain how a family argument had turned into a police matter overnight.
In the background, I heard someone say Ryan’s name.
Officer Daniels covered the phone for a second.
When he returned, his tone was even more measured.
“Ms.
Carter, I need a little more information.
You said you refused to care for the children last night?”
“Yes.”
“Who heard you refuse?”
“My parents.
Ryan.
Madison.
Everyone at dinner.”
“And your refusal was clear?”
I almost laughed.
“I said no several times.
Then I told them I was done and walked out.”
The memory came back with painful clarity: Mom calling me dramatic, Dad saying family helps family, Ryan sitting there while his wife told me I had no family of my own.
Officer Daniels asked for my parents’ names and confirmed my brother’s number.
Then he said something that made the situation feel even more serious.
“We’re trying to establish exactly what arrangements were made for the children this morning.”
“There were no arrangements with me.”
“I understand.”
“No,” I said, more firmly.
“I need that to be clear.
They didn’t misunderstand.
They didn’t think I might come over.
They asked me to keep helping with their children, and I refused.”
There was a beat of silence.
“I’ve noted that.”
My first instinct was to ask what Ryan had told him.
My second was stronger.
I didn’t want to get dragged into fixing another mess Ryan and Madison had created.
So I asked only one question.
“Are the kids safe?”
“Yes.
They’re safe right now.”
That was enough for me to breathe again.
Officer Daniels told me someone might contact me again and ended the call.
For nearly a minute, I stayed exactly where I was.
Then my phone began vibrating.
Ryan.
I watched his name flash across the screen.
I didn’t answer.
He called again.
Then Madison.
Then Mom.
Then Ryan again.
The same people who hadn’t followed me out of that dining room suddenly couldn’t reach me fast enough.
I let every call go unanswered.
Finally, a message from Ryan appeared.
Call me.
Now.
