‘Do not sign anything.

Do not let him take your phone.

Do not go anywhere private with him while people are asking questions.’

Khloe’s crying changed.

‘Why?’

Before I could answer, a man’s voice cut in from far away.

Victor.

Smooth at first, then cracking at the edges.

‘Give me that phone, Khloe.

Audrey, tell your mechanic to stop playing games.’

Trevor’s eyes went still.

Victor came closer to the receiver.

‘You people have no idea how business works.

Projects move before paperwork catches up.

Trevor shook my hand.

He’s backing out because he wants more money.’

Trevor leaned toward the phone.

‘I never shook your hand.’

Victor laughed, but it was too loud.

‘You expect everyone to believe a grease monkey over signed documents?’

The insult hung in my wedding room.

My face burned, but Trevor only looked at Earl.

Earl pulled his own phone from his pocket.

‘Trev.’

Trevor nodded once.

Earl tapped the screen, then held it near my phone.

Audio played through the little speaker, tinny but clear enough.

Victor’s voice, recorded at the shop gate weeks earlier: ‘Tell your boss he’s stupid if he thinks he can sit on that land forever.

Men like him always sell when the number gets big enough.’

A pause.

Earl’s voice on the recording: ‘He already said no.’

Victor again, colder: ‘Then I’ll make no look expensive.’

The phone line went dead quiet.

Mrs.

Donnelly pressed one hand over her mouth.

My father finally spoke, but not to us.

‘Victor, what is that?’

Victor’s voice exploded somewhere across town, no longer smooth, no longer rich, no longer polished.

‘Why was I recorded? That’s illegal.

That’s not admissible.

They’re trying to trap me.’

Trevor took the phone from my hand and spoke with a steadiness that made Victor sound smaller by comparison.

‘The title company has the deed, the refusal email, the forged option, the surveyor report, and the recording.

My attorney sent everything this afternoon because your lender scheduled the final investor presentation today.’

My mother gasped.

‘This afternoon?’

Trevor looked at the empty chairs.

‘During the wedding you all missed.’

No one spoke.

Not my mother.

Not my father.

Not Khloe.

For the first time in my life, their silence did not feel like punishment.

It felt like the bill coming due.

Then chaos returned all at once.

Khloe screamed Victor’s name.
