Chapter 6 — Their Father Left Them Overnight—Then a Millionaire Knelt in the Rain

4.9Editorial score

He made mistakes.

He bought formal dresses for a playground event.

He attempted pancakes and produced something Chloe described as “breakfast rocks.” He answered a question about where babies came from with a medical explanation so detailed that Lily interrupted him and said, “I don’t think I needed all that.”

But he stayed.

When they tested boundaries, he stayed.

When Chloe spilled hot chocolate across an important contract and burst into terrified tears, Alexander looked at the ruined pages, then at her face.

“It’s paper,” he said.

“You’re not mad?”

“I’m inconvenienced.”

“Is that mad?”

“Not even close.”

He helped her clean it up.

Their father failed to complete the court-ordered plan.

He moved again without notifying the authorities and stopped attending hearings.

The abandonment investigation proceeded separately, while the family court focused on the girls’ safety and stability.

After months of evidence, missed obligations, expert evaluations, and testimony, his parental rights were terminated.

Alexander did not celebrate.

There was nothing joyful about the fact that Lily and Chloe’s first father had chosen absence over them.

He simply went home, found the girls building a crooked tower from couch cushions, and sat on the floor beside them.

Lily studied his face.

“Did something happen?”

“Yes.”

“Bad?” Chloe asked.

“Sad,” Alexander said.

“But it means the court can now decide whether I may adopt you.”

Lily stopped holding the cushion.

“Adopt means forever?”

“Yes.”

“For real forever?”

“For real forever.”

The adoption hearing took place several months later.

Alexander wore the same dark suit he had worn the evening he found them, though the jacket now carried a faint streak of glitter from an art project Chloe had hugged him during that morning.

Lily wore pink.

Chloe wore green.

When the final papers were placed before him, Alexander’s hand trembled for the first time in any legal proceeding.

He signed his name.

The judge asked the girls whether they understood what the order meant.

Chloe raised her hand as if she were in school.

“It means he can’t give us back.”

Alexander turned toward her.

“I was never going to.”

Lily looked at the judge.

“It means he’s our dad because he came when nobody else did.”

Alexander lowered his eyes for a moment.

He had spent his entire life believing strength meant needing no one.

Two children had taught him that real strength was allowing yourself to be needed and refusing to run from the weight of it.

That evening, they returned to the penthouse.

The marble floors were still polished.

The skyline still glittered behind the glass.

Blake Medical Systems was still worth billions.

None of it felt like the most valuable thing in the room.

Lily and Chloe sat at the kitchen counter in pajamas, drinking hot chocolate beneath a mountain of tiny marshmallows.

Chloe looked toward the rain sliding down the windows.

“Dad?”

Alexander turned from the stove.

It still startled him when they called him that.
