I felt no urge to rescue him from the discomfort.
“The ownership-transfer clause did allow reassignment,” he continued, “but we should have followed the equivalency and notice requirements before taking action.
Moving your belongings before that process was completed was a mistake.”
“A very large mistake.”
“Yes.”
“And the damaged property?”
“Send receipts or estimates.
We’ll cover it.”
I looked at the newly replaced frame sitting on my counter.
Mateo had already sent one over that morning through Luca.
No note.
No dramatic gesture.
Just the frame.
“I’ll document everything,” I said.
“I expected you would.”
For once, Mr.
Lynn sounded like he understood exactly who he had underestimated.
Over the following week, I learned that Mateo had not taken 4C.
He had not taken 4B either.
Whatever arrangement he made with management happened somewhere far above my pay grade and well outside my curiosity.
I only saw him once more.
I came home from another hospital shift and found him near the elevator speaking quietly with Luca.
My body reacted before my brain did.
I stopped and looked toward my door.
Mateo noticed.
“No boxes,” he said.
I looked around.
He was right.
“No moving team.”
“No.”
“No surprise lease?”
“Not today.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“That sounded suspiciously like a joke.”
“Don’t spread rumors.”
Luca turned his face away, clearly hiding a smile.
I walked to my door and slid my key into the lock.
Before going inside, I looked back.
“Mateo.”
He paused.
“Thank you for stopping the move.”
His expression became serious.
“I should have stopped it sooner.”
That answer mattered more than a polished apology would have.
I nodded.
Then he added, “Keep that lease folder somewhere easier to reach.”
I smiled despite myself.
“Keep your movers away from my hallway.”
“Deal.”
I entered apartment 4B and closed the door behind me.
The place was still imperfect.
One table leg had a new scratch.
A stack of books waited to be reshelved.
The frame on the counter was newer than the photograph inside it.
But the apartment felt like mine again.
Not because a powerful man had rescued me.
