Julian Moretti opened the folder slowly.
Leo Vance stood twenty feet away holding a broom beneath the shattered remains of the Onyx Lounge chandelier.
Police moved behind the glass entrance.
Detectives photographed shell casings.
Paramedics crossed the ruined dining room while some of Chicago’s wealthiest citizens gave trembling statements about the ten seconds that had turned dinner into a battlefield.
Leo watched Julian read.
That was the first thing about her that changed.
Not her posture.
Not her breathing.
Her eyes.
They sharpened.
Marcus Vain leaned beside Julian and kept his voice low.
“Our guy ran her name.”
Julian looked at the photograph clipped to the first page.
It was Leo, though not the Leo standing before him in an oversized black uniform.
In the photograph her hair was shorter.
Her expression was harder.
She wore plain tactical clothing with no visible insignia.
Most of the page beneath the photograph had been blacked out in the copy Marcus had obtained.
There was no ordinary employment history.
No restaurant work.
No hospitality school.
No string of addresses belonging to a 24-year-old drifting through service jobs.
There were dates.
Training classifications.
References to federal task-force attachments.
And a notation that made Julian read the line twice.
Operational identity retired.
He closed the folder halfway.
“You lied to me.”
Leo rested the broom against a table.
“I told you I was a waitress.”
“You are standing in an apron.” Julian tapped the folder.
“That doesn’t make it the truth.”
Her gaze flicked toward Marcus.
Marcus gave her a thin smile.
Julian saw the calculation immediately.
Leo was measuring the distance to the elevator.
Then the service stairwell.
Then Marcus’s right hand.
Exactly as she had measured the room during the robbery.
Julian stepped away from his lieutenant.
“Don’t,” he said.
Leo looked back at him.
“I haven’t done anything.”
“That’s what concerns me.”
For several seconds, neither moved.
The surviving patrons were being escorted out one by one.
Each departure made the enormous lounge quieter.
Broken crystal crunched beneath police shoes.
A detective called for another evidence marker near table 6.
Julian lowered his voice.
“Federal?”
Leo said nothing.
“Military?”
Nothing.
