Most damaging to Arthur’s defense was a thin folder labeled with Maya’s initials.
Inside were copies of her intercepted letters, reports from a private investigator who had followed her, and printed summaries of calls between Maya and Victor.
Arthur had known exactly who Victor was.
He had known for years.
He had simply believed Victor would remain distant, restrained by old custody agreements, Elaine’s interference, and Maya’s fear of making matters worse.
The folder also contained a draft legal petition seeking to declare Maya financially incompetent and place her remaining inheritance under Arthur’s control.
The petition had never been filed, but Arthur had handwritten a note across the top.
“After her next episode.”
The phrase changed the financial dimension of the case.
Maya had inherited money from her paternal grandmother.
Arthur could not access it while Maya remained legally independent.
Portraying her as unstable would have given him a path toward controlling the account.
Julian’s accusation was no longer merely a family lie.
It fit a plan.
By dawn, Arthur Sterling had been formally arrested on charges including aggravated assault, unlawful confinement, coercion, evidence tampering, and attempted interference with an investigation.
Additional charges remained under review.
Julian was arrested for unlawful restraint, assault, conspiracy, and tampering with the security system.
Neither man was taken away in dramatic handcuffs before cheering crowds.
The process was quieter than that.
Their photographs were taken.
Their property was inventoried.
Their statements were recorded.
Their expensive watches and belts were sealed in plastic bags.
Arthur continued insisting that the system would protect him.
Instead, the system moved without him.
The state supreme court suspended him pending investigation.
