None of it had changed since she entered.
Only her interpretation had.
She looked at Evan.
He was standing beside Daniel now, asking him something quietly about the caliper he had replaced.
Daniel answered without impatience.
Victoria watched the exchange for several seconds.
Then she said, “You did it again.”
Daniel glanced up.
“What?”
“You listened to him.”
Evan looked toward his mother.
Victoria’s voice broke slightly.
“In less than an hour, you listened to him more carefully than I have lately.”
Evan’s expression changed.
“Mom—”
“No.
You were right about the noise.
I dismissed you.
You remembered Daniel.
I dismissed that too.”
She took a slow breath.
“I keep thinking protecting you means knowing better than you.”
Daniel remained silent.
This was no longer his conversation to control.
Victoria looked at her son.
“I’m sorry.”
Evan studied her for a long time.
Then he nodded once.
Not forgiveness packaged neatly in a second.
Just acknowledgement.
Victoria turned back toward Daniel.
“I want to repay you.”
Daniel’s expression hardened almost imperceptibly.
“The invoice is enough.”
“I don’t mean the repair.”
“I know.”
“I can write you a check.”
“No.”
“Daniel—”
“No.”
The firmness surprised her.
He wiped his hands with the same rag he had been using when she walked in.
“You don’t owe me money because I helped your son.”
Victoria looked around.
“This building needs work.”
Daniel gave her a level stare.
“It needed work before you came in.”
She realized immediately how the offer had sounded.
“I didn’t mean—”
“I know what you meant.”
He softened his voice.
“But if you turn this into a transaction, then you get to settle the debt and walk away feeling finished.”
Victoria stopped.
Daniel nodded toward Evan.
“You want to do something because of what happened?”
“Yes.”
