Chapter 5 — Someone Signed for Elena’s Letter—But Graham Never Saw It

Graham understood that.

One night, after Poppy had fallen asleep beneath my mother’s quilt, he placed the original letter on the kitchen table.

The paper had softened along the folds from being opened and read so many times.

“I thought staying away would keep you safe,” he said.

“I let other people define what protection meant, and you paid for it.”

I sat across from him in the same chair where Raymond had once demanded to know why Graham never came.

“You cannot recover the year you lost.”

“I know.”

“You cannot punish your father hard enough to make it disappear.”

“I know.”

“You cannot promise that your world will never hurt us again.”

Graham looked toward the living room, where Poppy’s hand rested outside the quilt.

“No,” he said.

“But I can stop asking you to trust promises and give you something you can watch.”

“What is that?”

“Tomorrow.”

The next morning, snow covered Maple Ridge.

I expected the roads from the airport to close.

I expected a message from an assistant explaining that the weather had changed Graham’s plans.

At seven, someone knocked on the door.

Graham stood on the porch wearing an ordinary winter coat and carrying a paper bag from Millie’s Corner Café.

Snow clung to his hair.

His car was parked at the end of the drive because the plow had not reached my street.

“You walked?” I asked.

“The last half mile.”

Behind me, Poppy heard his voice and began calling the only name she could manage for him.

“Ga.”

Graham’s face changed.

I opened the door wider.

He stepped inside, stamped the snow from his shoes, and placed breakfast on the table.

The town could believe what it wanted.

His father could call us a threat.

Westlake Global could measure every decision by risk, reputation, and cost.

None of them controlled this room anymore.

The letter had reached him too late to save the beginning of our story.

But when Poppy reached for him, Graham was there to answer.
