Life had taught her not to make promises bigger than reality.
But that day, they were okay.
Several weeks later, Nathan passed through the twelfth floor again.
There were no speeches and no dramatic gathering.
He stopped at Emma’s desk and asked how the corrected client reports had gone.
“They accepted them,” she said.
“No issues.”
He nodded toward the photograph of Ethan.
“How’s the astronomer?”
Emma smiled.
“Still convinced Saturn is better than every other planet.”
“He’s wrong, but I respect the commitment.”
She laughed unexpectedly.
Nathan started to leave, then paused.
“The emergency-care procedure goes into effect Monday.
HR used feedback from several employees, not just your case.”
Emma looked around the office.
She had learned since the incident that she wasn’t the only person who had been afraid to mention a sick child, an aging parent, or a morning when life refused to cooperate with a calendar.
Her firing had simply exposed something everyone else had learned to hide.
“Thank you,” she said.
Nathan shook his head once.
“Your work earned your place here.
The company should have remembered that before making you beg for it.”
After he walked away, Emma looked at Ethan’s photograph.
Two years earlier, Daniel had left her believing that survival meant shrinking every need until no one could complain about carrying it.
At work, she’d done the same thing.
She’d hidden exhaustion, hidden fear, hidden motherhood whenever she could.
Ethan had copied her without either of them realizing it.
That morning, he had sat behind a plant for three hours trying to be invisible so his mother could remain employable.
Emma would remember that longer than she remembered Lauren’s words.
That evening, when she picked Ethan up, snow had started falling lightly over Chicago.
He ran toward her carrying his planet book.
“Mom, did you know Saturn could float in water if you had a bathtub big enough?”
Emma took his hand.
“I did not know that.”
He spent the entire walk home explaining planets at full volume.
For once, Emma didn’t remind him to be quiet.
