“No,” I said.

“I told him what happened.”

“You always do this.”

“What?”

“Make me the villain whenever I try to set boundaries with Emma.”

My voice stayed low because Emma was nearby.

“You don’t get to set a boundary using her medication.”

“She needed discipline.”

“She needed air.”

Elaine looked away.

That was the first time I saw something besides anger or superiority cross her face.

Not remorse.

Not yet.

But uncertainty.

Her certainty had depended on one thing: that she was the highest authority in the room.

Then Emma called me.

Then I called 911.

Then responders arrived.

And soon Daniel would walk through the door.

One by one, the walls around Elaine’s version of events were disappearing.

When Daniel arrived, he went directly to Emma.

He crouched beside her and pulled her carefully into his arms.

“Hey, kiddo.”

Emma buried her face against him.

“I couldn’t breathe.”

His eyes closed.

“I know.”

“Grandma wouldn’t give it back.”

Daniel looked over her shoulder at his mother.

I had seen that expression before.

Usually when Elaine challenged him, his face went blank.

His shoulders tightened.

His voice became softer.

That old childhood instinct appeared for a second.

Then he looked at Emma again.

And something changed.

He stood.

“Mom.”

Elaine lifted her chin.

“Finally.

Maybe you can explain to Rachel that calling emergency services over a discipline issue was completely—”

“Did you take Emma’s inhaler?”

Elaine stopped.

“She was behaving badly.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

I had never heard Daniel speak to her like that.

Elaine noticed too.

“I put it away temporarily.”

“Did Emma ask for it back?”

“She was throwing a fit.”

“Did she ask for it?”

Elaine’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“Did Rachel tell you to give it to her?”

Elaine looked at me.

“Your wife was hysterical.”
