“You leave Ryan to handle the actual family.”
“I work because I pay for this family.”
“And you never let anyone forget it.”
The shaved strip on my scalp burned as if the clippers were still touching it.
Suddenly, the attack no longer felt like a spontaneous act of jealousy.
It felt calculated.
My promotion meant a larger salary and more independence.
It also meant I might finally look closely at our finances.
The night before, during the drive home, I had decided I would use part of my first bonus to reduce the mortgage principal.
Ryan had gone silent when I mentioned it.
At the time, I assumed he was tired.
Now I understood.
A direct payment to the mortgage company would have exposed the missed installments immediately.
“You knew I was going to review the mortgage,” I said.
Ryan’s face changed.
Linda looked at him sharply.
That was confirmation enough.
I raised my phone and photographed every page I could see.
Ryan reached toward it.
“Stop doing that.”
“Don’t touch me.”
“You’re making this worse.”
“No.
You made it worse every time you forged my name.”
“It wasn’t like that.”
I photographed the refinancing checklist, the false signature, the debt total, and my promotion announcement.
Linda tried to close the folder.
I pulled it away.
“You are standing beside the woman who shaved my head while I was sleeping,” I told Ryan.
“And you’re worried about paperwork.”
His face tightened.
“My mother lost control because you’ve been treating us like employees.”
“I paid her medical bills.”
“And she was grateful.”
Linda laughed once, without humor.
“Grateful? You handed me money like I was a charity case.”
“I paid the pharmacy directly.”
Silence filled the room.
That detail mattered.
If I had paid the pharmacy, why did the folder contain repeated withdrawals labeled as reimbursements for Linda’s medication?
I searched deeper.
There they were: monthly transfers from our household account to an account bearing Linda’s initials.
Some were twice the cost of her prescriptions.
Others occurred in months when I had already paid the pharmacy bill myself.
“What were these payments?” I asked.
Linda’s eyes moved away.
Ryan answered for her.
“She had other expenses.”
“Then why label them medication?”
“It was easier for our records.”
“Whose records? The ones you hid from me?”
He rubbed the back of his neck.
I had seen Ryan nervous before, but never like this.
His usual confidence had vanished.
He kept glancing at the folder as though it were a weapon.
I closed it and placed it inside my work bag.
