She still looked twice at unfamiliar cars.

She still woke sometimes hearing an explosion that was not there.

But the fear gradually stopped controlling the room.

One evening near closing, the restaurant door opened.

Matteo Reachi walked in alone.

Every conversation within twenty feet seemed to soften instinctively.

Elise stared at him from behind the counter.

“No fleet?”

“Parked around the corner.”

She narrowed her eyes.

He added, “Two vehicles.”

“That is not a fleet.”

“Progress.”

He sat at the counter.

Elise poured him coffee.

He placed a plain envelope beside the cup.

She looked at it suspiciously.

“If that contains enough money to buy my silence, I’m pouring this coffee on you.”

“It contains reimbursement for your medical expenses, lost wages, and the shoes you left on the beach.”

“My shoes were terrible.”

“I was informed.”

She pushed the envelope back.

“I’ll take the medical expenses.

Nothing else.”

“Elise.”

“Matteo.”

They stared at each other.

Finally he removed several pages from the envelope, folded them once, and returned the smaller remainder to her.

“Medical expenses.”

“And the shoes.”

His expression changed almost imperceptibly.

“The shoes.”

She accepted it.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Matteo said, “You were right about something.”

“That must be difficult for you.”

“Extremely.”

Elise waited.

He looked down at the untouched coffee.

“When I came to your apartment, I believed protecting you meant controlling every variable around you.”

“Including me.”

“Yes.”

“And now?”

“Now I understand that saving someone’s life does not give you ownership of it.”

Elise leaned against the counter.

“That sounds familiar.”

“You said it first.”

“I usually do.”

Matteo finally smiled.

Not the cold almost-smile she had seen before.

A real one.

Brief, tired, human.

Then he grew serious again.

“I did not come to claim you, Elise.

I came because my survival made you a target.

I could not allow the price of my life to become yours.”
