“Tell her the agreement is binding.”
Claire’s face changed.
The anger remained, but something deeper appeared beneath it.
Recognition.
“So that was your plan,” she said loudly enough for Margaret to hear.
“You wanted Julian to believe I took the money.”
There was a pause on the line.
Then my mother asked, “Who is with you?”
I switched the call to speaker.
“Claire is standing in front of me,” I said.
“With Owen and Miles.”
Margaret made a small sound before recovering.
“Do not discuss this in public.”
“You knew they existed.”
“I knew there had been a pregnancy.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“Julian, lower your voice.”
I had obeyed that command my entire life.
At board meetings, at family dinners, and during every crisis she had quietly cleaned away before it could stain the Carter name.
This time I did not lower it.
“Did you forge Claire’s signature?”
“Come to my house.
We will speak privately.”
Claire reached for the receipt.
I covered it with my hand, not to take it from her, but to stop the air from lifting it off the tablet.
She recoiled anyway.
The movement shamed me more than her words had.
She still expected my touch to mean control.
I withdrew my hand immediately.
“Nora,” I said, keeping my eyes on Claire, “preserve the file.
Make copies of the metadata, access history, and every related payment.
Send them to independent counsel, not anyone employed by my mother.”
Margaret’s voice sharpened.
“You will do no such thing.”
Nora looked between us.
For years, Margaret had been the most powerful person in Carter Global without holding the chief executive title.
Employees obeyed her because they knew I usually would.
Nora locked the tablet against her chest.
“Yes, Mr.
Carter.”
My mother exhaled slowly.
“You are allowing that woman to manipulate you again.”
Claire took her sons’ hands.
“No,” she said.
“He manipulated himself.
You only gave him the document he wanted.”
She started to leave.
I did not block her path.
“Claire, please.”
She stopped but did not turn around.
“I know I have no right to ask anything from you,” I said.
“But that file uses your name.
It may have been used to hide what happened to you and the boys.
Let Nora make a copy of the receipt.”
Claire looked down at Owen and Miles.
Owen whispered, “Can we go home?”
