Chapter 5 — She Hit My Pregnant Belly for $150,000—Then Begged Me to Revoke One Order

4.9Editorial score

Money for two babies who had not even been born yet.

Money for medical bills, childcare, education, emergencies.

To Catherine, it was unused family property waiting to be redirected to the child she favored.

David sat down heavily.

For a moment, he looked more wounded than angry.

Then he asked the question I knew had been coming.

“What happened in the kitchen?”

Neither woman answered.

David looked at Victoria.

“My wife says you hit her.”

“She was blocking me.”

The room seemed to contract around that sentence.

Victoria realized what she had admitted.

She rushed to repair it.

“I mean she got between me and the phone.

Everything happened fast.”

I watched Catherine close her eyes.

Not from sympathy.

From frustration.

Victoria was destroying the story they had planned.

David said, “Did you drag her across the floor?”

“No.”

“You touched her phone?”

“I told you, I was trying to get help.”

“After she asked you to call an ambulance?”

Victoria’s lips parted.

Again, silence.

Then I remembered something.

My left hand.

The thing I had protected beneath my chest while Victoria dragged me.

I looked down at my hospital belongings sealed in a clear bag beside the bed.

“My ring.”

David followed my gaze.

Among my belongings was the small wearable device I had started using during pregnancy for safety alerts and quick emergency actions.

It was not the reason the financial hold existed, but during the struggle I had kept my left hand tucked beneath me because I was trying to preserve the device long enough for its emergency function to register.

I had not known whether it worked before I blacked out.

David reached for the belongings but stopped.

“One of the responders told me an emergency alert had been transmitted from the house.”

Victoria stared at him.

“What?”

David continued slowly.

“They knew something was wrong before anyone inside decided to call.”

Catherine turned toward her daughter.

“You told me her phone was under the cabinet.”

“I didn’t know about that thing!”

The moment the words left Victoria’s mouth, the room went silent again.

I did not smile.

I did not need to.

She had just confirmed she knew exactly where my phone had been.

David looked at her with something final in his expression.

“How did you know the phone was under the cabinet?” Catherine whispered.

Victoria’s face crumpled with fury.

“You were there!”

Catherine stepped back.

And just like that, the alliance shattered.

They began accusing each other.
