Chapter 6 — She Evicted Me From the Townhouse I’d Been Paying For

4.9Editorial score

A marriage built around silence was harder.

He nodded as if he understood he no longer had the right to demand an immediate answer.

Beatrice remained near the staircase.

She looked smaller than she had on Tuesday morning.

Not defeated.

Not destroyed.

Just forced, finally, to stand inside the reality she had spent years refusing to examine.

Before I walked out, she spoke.

“I was wrong.”

Ryan turned toward her.

So did I.

Beatrice swallowed.

“I should never have told you to leave.”

I waited.

“And I should have asked more questions before deciding what belonged to whom.”

It was not a perfect apology.

But it was the first honest sentence I had heard from her about the townhouse.

I nodded once.

Then I picked up my bag.

Ryan followed me to the door.

“I’m sorry,” he said again.

This time he didn’t add an excuse.

I believed he was sorry.

Whether sorry would become different was something only time could answer.

I stepped outside into the morning with my keys in one hand and the black folder tucked beneath my arm.

Behind me was a beautiful townhouse that had once looked like proof of security.

Now it looked like what it had always been: an expensive building held together by monthly payments and assumptions.

I had spent five years paying $5,600 a month to help create a comfortable home.

The moment I was told I no longer belonged in it, I finally understood that comfort and belonging were not the same thing.

I did not destroy anyone’s world.

I simply stopped financing the version of it in which my money was welcome and I was disposable.
