“Was she right?”
Before I could answer, my phone rang again.
This time it was my father.
I almost ignored it.
Then I remembered the look on his face at the table.
I answered.
“Dad.”
His voice sounded older than it had that morning.
“I should have said something.”
I didn’t rescue him from the silence.
He continued.
“I should have said something the second Carol closed that purse.”
“Yes.”
“I was afraid she’d turn it into a fight about the trust.”
“She did that anyway.”
“I know.”
Then he said something I didn’t expect.
“And she was wrong about the trust.”
I stood up.
“What?”
My father lowered his voice.
“Your grandfather amended it after your cousin Daniel adopted his daughter.
I remember the language because your grandfather insisted on it.
Descendants included children by birth or legal adoption.”
I stared at the dark television screen.
“Are you sure?”
“Completely.”
“Does Carol know?”
A long pause.
“She should.
She has administered it for years.”
The conversation changed in that moment.
Until then, Carol’s behavior had been cruel.
Now there was a second possibility.
She had not merely expressed an ugly personal opinion.
She might have used trust money while knowingly misrepresenting who the trust recognized as family.
“Dad, did those envelopes actually come from the trust?”
“That’s what she told everyone.”
“I know what she said.
Do you know whether it was true?”
“No.”
Another pause.
“Your cousin was recording when she handed them out.”
I remembered the raised phone.
“Who?”
“Emily’s mother.
She sent the video to your mom because your mom asked for it.”
A minute later, the video arrived.
I watched it with the sound low.
There was Carol, standing beside the floral tablecloth.
There were the envelopes.
There was Lily waiting.
Then my mother’s voice: “Carol, you forgot Ethan and Lily.”
And Carol’s answer, perfectly clear.
“I didn’t forget anyone.
This money comes from the family trust earnings.
