Chapter 6 — She Called My $125,000 a Gift—Until I Opened the Folder

4.9Editorial score

“Was it worth it?”

I thought about the party, the applause, the torn notice on the floor, and the sentence she had written before the transfer: I would never act like your money didn’t matter.

“Keeping the money would not have made your lie true,” I said.

“It only would have taught you that lying to me had no cost.”

Gwen left without saying goodbye.

I eventually used part of the recovered money as a down payment on a smaller townhouse.

It had no marble island, no dramatic staircase, and no room for thirty people.

The first evening I spent there, sunlight came through the blinds and warmed the empty living room.

The black folder sat on the counter beside my keys.

I opened it one final time, checked that every page remained intact, and placed it in a locked cabinet.

I had helped my sister because I loved her.

I protected myself because love had not protected me.

The house was gone, the money was returned, and the family story Gwen had tried to write without me could no longer survive the evidence.

I did not need applause.

I only needed my name restored to the truth.
