“That’s not the same thing.”
“No,” I said.
“It was easier.
You got to damage someone without putting your own name on an accusation.”
Jenna looked down at her phone.
Mr.
Harris did not interrupt.
Mrs.
Whitman took a step back from the table.
“You all make me sound like some kind of monster.”
I studied her for a moment.
I did not think she was a monster.
That would have made everything simpler.
She was a person who had decided that certain kinds of work meant certain kinds of people.
She saw part-time schedules and assumed desperation.
She heard that someone had not finished college and assumed limitation.
She stood near a cash register and believed the woman behind it had less dignity than the person criticizing her.
The damage came from how ordinary those assumptions were to her.
“I don’t know what you are,” I said.
“I know what you did.”
That landed harder than shouting would have.
Mrs.
Whitman looked toward Mr.
Harris.
“Are we finished?”
“That depends on you,” he said.
“The review is finished.
What you do with it is your choice.”
She picked up her purse and walked toward the exit.
At the automatic doors, she stopped.
For a second, I thought she might turn around and apologize.
She did not.
She simply left.
The doors slid closed behind her.
Jenna sank into the chair opposite me.
“My hands are shaking,” she whispered.
I laughed then.
Not because anything was funny, exactly.
Because the tension had been sitting inside all of us for so long that it needed somewhere to go.
“You did fine,” I told her.
“I thought she was going to grab my phone.”
“She would’ve had to get through Mr.
Harris first.”
Mr.
Harris smiled.
“Please don’t make me sound more intimidating than I am.”
I looked at him.
“Why did headquarters care this much?”
His smile faded.
“Because businesses lose good people when disrespect becomes normal.
Sometimes management notices too late.”
He glanced toward my new store’s registers.
“And because accusations about honesty cannot be treated casually.”
I nodded.
That was all I had wanted from the beginning.
Not revenge.
