Chapter 7 — My Twin Mocked My Scars Until I Asked Mom What Really Happened

4.9Editorial score

Not because two hundred people finally saw my scars.

The scars had never been the secret that mattered most.

The real secret was what our family had built around them: silence, guilt, protection, resentment, and twelve years of mistaken stories.

The afternoon Chloe tried to expose the part of me she believed was shameful, she accidentally exposed all of that instead.

And strangely, once everything was visible, I stopped feeling the need to hide.

I still wore long sleeves when I wanted to.

I wore short sleeves when I wanted to.

Sometimes people stared.

Sometimes they asked questions.

Sometimes I answered.

Sometimes I didn’t.

Chloe never made another joke about my skin.

More importantly, she stopped treating my boundaries like challenges she was entitled to win.

We rebuilt slowly.

Not as the perfect twins people expected us to be, but as two sisters finally old enough to know that love does not erase harm, and gratitude does not automatically create forgiveness.

One evening almost a year after the party, Chloe handed me a photograph our father had found.

We were five in the picture, sitting side by side on the floor in matching pajamas.

Buttons was squeezed between us.

Neither of us had scars yet.

Chloe looked at the photograph and said, “I keep wishing I could go back and stop us from going to that house.”

I shook my head.

“I don’t.”

She looked at me.

I touched one of the pale lines running along my forearm.

For years, I had thought of those marks as the price of one terrible night.

Now I understood them differently.

They were evidence of something I had done before I was old enough to understand courage.

They were evidence that I had survived.

And they were proof that the body Chloe once tried to turn into a spectacle had already carried more strength than either of us knew how to name.

“I just wish we’d told the truth sooner,” I said.

Chloe nodded.

So did I.
