His expression hardened.

“This is my son.”

“And Ethan is mine.”

“I know that.”

“Do you?”

The room went silent.

Behind Jason, Alyssa appeared in the hallway.

Olivia stood farther back beside Ethan, who was still holding one broken half of his airplane against his chest.

Every child in the house was watching.

That mattered.

For years, they had watched me absorb disrespect and then continue cooking, driving, paying, fixing, and smiling as though nothing had happened.

Whatever I did next would teach them something too.

I closed the laptop halfway.

“Jason, tomorrow you and your father can decide how your phone service will be paid for.

The same goes for your gaming subscriptions and the extras attached to my accounts.

Tonight, you’re going to leave Ethan alone.”

“You’re punishing me because I told the truth.”

“No.

I’m believing you.”

That confused him.

“You said I’m just the woman your father married.

You said you owe me no respect and Ethan is not your family.

Alyssa’s face changed slightly.

Daniel pointed toward the hallway.

This time even Alyssa reacted.

“Jason,” she whispered.

But it was too late.

Daniel’s shoulders stiffened.

I opened the laptop again.

“Why would Melissa think she knows what Daniel will let me do?”

Daniel reached toward the screen.

“Rachel.”

I moved the laptop away.

“No.

We’re done pretending these are random teenage comments.”

He lowered his voice.

“Not in front of the kids.”

“Interesting.

Because apparently plenty has been said about me in front of them.”

Jason’s bravado finally cracked.

He looked toward the stairs.

“Can I go now?”

“Yes.”

He left without another word.

Alyssa followed more slowly, avoiding my eyes.

Olivia took Ethan by the hand and led him toward their rooms.

When we were alone, Daniel shut the office door.

“What do you think you saw on the phone account?” he asked.

“Repeated late-night calls between you and Melissa.”

“She’s the mother of my children.

We communicate.”

“I know.
