4.9Editorial score

His shoulders loosened slightly.

That became the rule I carried through everything that followed.

At 10:43 that night, Christine finally arrived.

She came through the corridor quickly, coat half buttoned, hair disordered, phone clenched in her hand.

When she saw me outside Jake’s room, she stopped.

“Is he okay?”

I looked at her.

“You tell me.”

Her face tightened.

“I didn’t know it was this bad.”

“Our son left your father’s property bleeding from his ear.”

“I know what it looked like.”

“What it looked like?”

Her eyes moved toward the nurses’ station.

“Can we not do this here?”

That sentence told me more than an apology would have.

I stepped closer, keeping my voice low.

“Why were you still at that house?”

Christine’s mouth opened, then closed.

“My father was upset.

Brian and Scott were upset.

Everybody was screaming.

I was trying to calm things down.”

“While Jake walked away alone?”

“I thought Brian was going after him.”

“Brian was one of the men holding him down.”

Her eyes snapped to mine.

“He told you that?”

I felt something settle inside me.

Not rage this time.

Recognition.

“You already knew.”

Christine looked away.

“It happened fast.”

“How fast does an eight-year-old have to bleed before you leave with him?”

She said nothing.

A nurse appeared before either of us could continue and told us Jake needed quiet.

Christine went inside first.

I stayed in the hallway.

My phone vibrated once.

A message from the cleanup team contained only four words.

Witness secured.

Video exists.

I read the message twice.

Mrs.

Patterson hadn’t merely seen Jake after the assault.

Her home security camera faced enough of the neighboring sidewalk and the edge of the driveway to capture part of what happened.

Not everything.

Enough.

The team did not enter anyone’s property.

They didn’t threaten Christine’s father.

They didn’t knock on his door.

They simply helped Mrs.

Patterson preserve the original recording before it could be overwritten, documented when it was created and arranged for her to speak directly with detectives.

By midnight, Nashville-area investigators had Jake’s medical report, Mrs.

Patterson’s statement and the preserved footage.
