Chelsea’s hand shot across the table the moment the video started.
“Turn it off!” she screamed.
I moved the laptop back before she could reach it.
The private dining room went so quiet that I could hear the faint clink of dishes beyond the closed door.
Ryan stared at his wife.
Until that second, he had been angry at Diane.
His shoulders had been rigid, his jaw set, ready to defend Chelsea against whatever terrible thing he believed his mother had done.
Now he looked confused.
“Why do you want him to turn it off?” he asked.
Chelsea’s mouth opened, but nothing came out.
Diane was still sitting beside me with one hand resting near her untouched plate.
The trembling had not completely stopped.
I hated seeing that.
But I also knew something Chelsea did not.
The folder on the table was not a collection of suspicions.
It was a sequence.
Emails.
Receipts.
Still images.
And then the hotel footage itself.
Each piece answered the question created by the one before it.
I let the video continue.
The camera angle showed a hotel corridor.
The image was clear enough to recognize Chelsea immediately as she stepped into view carrying the same designer purse she had brought to my birthday dinner.
Ryan leaned toward the screen.
Chelsea whispered, “This is insane.”
Nobody answered her.
On the recording, she walked down the corridor and stopped outside a room.
A moment later, a man approached from the opposite direction.
His face was visible only briefly before he turned toward the door.
Chelsea greeted him with the familiarity of someone who had been expecting him.
Ryan stopped breathing for a second.
Then he looked at his wife.
“Who is that?”
Chelsea shook her head.
“You can’t tell anything from that.”
I paused the video.
“That is why I brought the folder.”
I lifted the first hotel receipt and slid it toward Ryan.
The reservation information matched the date shown on the security footage.
Ryan read it once.
Then again.
His eyes moved to the next page.
Another receipt.
Different date.
Same hotel.
Then another.
Chelsea reached for them.
“Those could be anything.”
Ryan pulled the papers away before she could touch them.
“Chelsea.”
His voice had changed.
It was no longer the sharp voice he had used on his mother.
It was quieter.
More dangerous because he was finally asking instead of assuming.
“What is this?”
