Chapter 1 — My Sister Kicked My Pregnant Stomach—Then the Courtroom Video Started

4.9Editorial score

The screen flickered to life, and the courtroom became so quiet that I could hear Lily breathing against my chest.

Kayla sat at the defense table with our mother directly behind her.

Until that moment, she had carried herself with the same careless confidence she had shown at my baby shower.

Her hair was perfectly arranged.

Her clothes were conservative.

Her hands rested neatly beside her lawyer’s files.

She looked like someone attending an inconvenient appointment, not someone accused of nearly killing her sister and unborn niece.

Then the video began.

The first image showed the event hall before I arrived.

Guests moved between tables.

Gifts were stacked near the wall.

Kayla stood beside our mother near the stage.

There was no sound at first, but the camera angle was clear.

My mother opened her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.

My ultrasound.

She handed it to Kayla.

A murmur traveled through the courtroom.

Kayla leaned toward her lawyer and whispered urgently.

Our mother’s face tightened, but she kept her eyes fixed on the screen.

The recording moved forward.

I entered the hall beside Ethan.

The camera captured the way people stopped talking, the way Kayla watched me, and the way our mother refused to meet my eyes.

Then Ethan stepped outside to take his call.

Kayla walked directly to the microphone.

This time, the courtroom audio was turned on.

“Look!” her recorded voice shouted through the speakers.

“Her baby is disabled!”

Hearing it again felt different from remembering it.

At the shower, the words had hit me before I could defend myself.

In court, they hung in the air long enough for everyone to understand the intention behind them.

The recording caught my mother laughing.

She shifted in her seat behind Kayla.

On the screen, I stood slowly.

I looked smaller than I remembered, one hand supporting the underside of my stomach.

“What is wrong with you?” my recorded voice demanded.

Kayla’s answer followed.

“I’m just saying what everyone’s thinking.

Why bring a child into the world just to suffer?”

Lily stirred against me.

I placed my palm over the blanket covering her back and felt the steady rhythm of her breathing.

The video showed me taking one step forward with my empty hand extended toward the ultrasound.

It showed Kayla’s shoulders turning.

It showed her lifting her leg.

It showed the pointed heel striking the center of my pregnant stomach.

Several people in the courtroom gasped even though they knew what the case was about.

The prosecutor paused the recording at the moment before I fell.

Kayla stared down at the table.

Her lawyer had argued that the movement was accidental.

In earlier statements, Kayla had claimed I rushed at her and caused her to lose her balance.

Our mother had insisted that Kayla merely raised her foot to protect herself.

The frozen image destroyed both stories.

My arms were not raised to attack.

Kayla was balanced firmly on one leg.

Her body leaned forward, not backward.

Her heel was pointed directly at me.

The prosecutor allowed the video to continue.
