Chapter 5 — My Sister-in-Law Burned Me—Then She Saw My Phone Was Recording

4.9Editorial score

“She’s lying.”

I held up my phone.

“It’s recorded.”

Daniel’s eyes closed for one second.

Then I pointed toward the pantry.

“And your mother’s camera was facing the oven.”

Patricia said, “We don’t even know if it caught anything.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“You sent me for champagne.”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

He looked toward the garage door.

“There are six bottles in the garage fridge.”

Nobody answered him.

That silence was the first time I saw the entire evening from his perspective.

His mother’s unnecessary errand.

His sister in the kitchen with me.

My injuries.

The recording.

The camera.

Patricia’s desperation to call it an accident before he had even heard the facts.

Daniel looked older than he had when he left the house twenty minutes earlier.

“Show them the footage,” he said.

Patricia folded her arms.

“I don’t have to hand over private family video just because she is hysterical.”

I expected Daniel to argue.

He did not.

He looked at the authority standing nearby and said, “The system is in this house.

Please preserve whatever you legally can.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re choosing her?”

Daniel finally looked directly at his sister.

“She is my wife.

She is burned.

And you are worried about me choosing sides.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You don’t know what she has done to this family.”

“Then tell me.”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no hidden betrayal to reveal.

No theft.

No affair.

No secret attack on them.

My offense was that Daniel had married me and his family had never accepted losing control of him.

When the camera footage was finally preserved and reviewed, it did not need dramatic interpretation.

The angle was wide, exactly as Patricia had once bragged.

It showed me at the oven.

It showed both my hands on the roasting pan.

It showed Vanessa enter behind me.

It showed her pause.

Then it showed her drive her shoulder into my back.

The pan tipped.

I fell.

Vanessa remained standing.

She bent over me.

Then she stepped across my body and walked toward the dining room.
