She stepped back.
That small movement changed the room more effectively than any speech could have.
People noticed fear when it had somewhere visible to go.
Elian noticed it too.
His voice hardened.
“I said come outside.”
“No.”
The word shook, but it came out.
Elian glanced around and seemed to remember the witnesses.
His tone softened again.
“Baby, we can talk about this privately.”
Mara’s fingers tightened around the edge of her coat.
“You already showed me what happens privately.”
Silence.
My mother made a sound beside Dad—not quite a sob, not quite a gasp.
Elian’s face went white.
Victor stepped between his son and the room.
“That is enough.”
I held up the folder.
“No.
This is.”
He looked at it but did not reach for it.
“What exactly do you think you have?”
“Copies.”
That word bothered him more than if I had said evidence.
Copies meant the originals were somewhere else.
His eyes narrowed.
“Of what?”
I opened the folder.
Not wide enough for the guests to read anything from their seats.
Just enough for Victor to see the first printed page.
It was a transcript of one of the voice messages Mara had saved.
His own words.
His own threat.
His own calm explanation of what would happen to our parents’ business if Mara humiliated Elian by refusing to marry him.
Victor’s eyes moved down the page.
Then back to me.
“You have no idea what context that conversation occurred in.”
“I have the recording.”
His nostrils flared.
Mara spoke from behind me.
“And the emails.”
Victor turned toward her.
For years, he had apparently intimidated people by looking at them as though they were problems that could be purchased, crushed, or postponed.
Mara nearly folded beneath that look.
I felt her hand brush my sleeve.
I moved half a step closer to her.
Victor noticed.
“So this is your doing,” he said to me.
“No,” I replied.
“Your messages are your doing.”
He lowered his voice.
“You should be very careful.”
Dad stood.
It was the first time Victor seemed to remember that my parents were still in the room.
“What did you do to my daughter?” Dad asked.
