“I invited Eric’s entire department because Eric gave me the guest list.
You chose to take the microphone.
You chose to humiliate me in front of three hundred people.
You chose the red dress, the speech and the sentence about what I could never give my husband.”
My voice remained quiet.
“I only made sure the truth was in the room when you did it.”
Natalie’s confidence cracked completely.
“You were supposed to leave,” she said.
I almost laughed, but there was nothing funny in the way she said it.
She had imagined the scene carefully.
I would cry.
Guests would surround me.
I would flee through the ballroom doors while she remained beneath the lights beside Eric, pregnant and triumphant.
She had not prepared for me to stay.
Eric reached for my arm.
“Can we talk privately?”
I stepped away before his fingers touched me.
“You had four months to talk privately.”
His eyes widened.
“Four months?”
Grant placed the first photograph on top of the folder: Eric and Natalie leaving the Brooklyn hotel.
The date was printed beneath the image.
“That was when I found out,” I said.
Eric studied the photograph.
“Why didn’t you confront me?”
“Because I knew you would lie.”
“I would have explained.”
“You called a hotel room an emergency meeting.
You called Natalie’s perfume a car air freshener.
You called three hours away on Valentine’s Day a trip to buy flowers.
I had already heard your explanations.”
My mother began to cry quietly.
Natalie looked toward her.
“Mom, please.”
My mother raised her head.
“Your sister paid your debts,” she said.
“She defended you every time your father and I asked where your money went.
She gave you a key to her home.”
Natalie’s face twisted.
“Everything has always been about her.
Her service.
Her discipline.
Her perfect marriage.
Every room we entered, someone asked what she thought first.”
There it was.
Not love.
Not an accident.
A competition I had never known I was participating in.
“So you slept with my husband to win?” I asked.
“He came to me,” she said.
“He complained that you were cold.
That you treated your marriage like another assignment.
He said you made him feel invisible.”
Eric lowered his eyes.
The words hurt because they sounded rehearsed.
He had likely repeated them whenever he needed permission to betray me.
