He stopped.

“After the anniversary? After I paid for this party? After she gave birth?”

“Rachel, this isn’t simple.”

“It became simple when she picked up that microphone.”

I reached into the red folder and removed a second envelope.

Unlike the laboratory report, this one did not surprise Grant or Mark.

They had both watched my attorney prepare it.

Eric recognized the law firm’s name embossed on the corner.

“What is that?”

“The explanation you wanted to give me privately is no longer necessary.”

I handed him the envelope.

Inside were divorce papers filed that morning.

My attorney had also prepared formal notice that I was seeking reimbursement for marital funds spent on the affair.

Following legal advice, I had already moved my military pension and personal savings into accounts held solely in my name.

I had not hidden joint money or emptied anything that belonged to both of us.

I had simply stopped giving Eric access to assets that were mine.

He tore open the envelope and skimmed the first page.

Natalie sat in the nearest chair.

Her red dress, which had seemed designed for a victory entrance, now made her impossible to overlook.

“So that’s it?” she asked me.

“You destroy my life and walk away?”

I felt something inside me finally go still.

“I did not sleep with your husband.

I did not lie about your child’s father.

I did not announce your private pain to three hundred people.”

“You knew I was pregnant and said nothing.”

“It was not my secret to announce.”

“But you let me stand up there.”

“You wanted the room, Natalie.

I let you have it.”

Mark stepped closer to her.

“We need to discuss the baby, but not tonight.”

She looked up hopefully.

“Do you still love me?”

He took a long breath.

“I will take responsibility for my child.

That does not erase what you did.”

Her face crumpled.

That distinction was the first real consequence she had faced.

Mark was not abandoning the baby, but he refused to reward deception with a relationship.

Eric suddenly shoved the divorce papers back into the envelope.

“Mark, we can fix the company issue.
