Chapter 4 — My Silent Son Spoke to the Biker Next Door—Then Frank Went Pale

4.9Editorial score

Beside him stood an older man in a white undershirt and work pants, one hand resting on the mower handle.

The teenage boy was Frank.

I recognized his eyes immediately.

“Arturo?” I asked.

Frank nodded.

On the back, in faint blue ink, someone had written a date from twenty-eight years earlier.

Frank turned the photograph over again.

“Keep it taped inside my toolbox.”

“All these years?”

“All these years.”

I looked at the older man in the picture.

“What happened to him?”

Frank’s face changed.

“Died when I was twenty-three.

Heart.”

He looked down at the porch boards.

“He taught me engines.

Welding.

How not to strip a bolt.

How to listen before you touch something.”

Then, after a moment, he added, “How to sit near somebody without making them perform for you.”

That sentence broke something open in me.

For years, almost every adult interaction in Caleb’s life had contained a request.

Say hello.

Look at me.

Choose the picture.

Use your words.

Tell Grandma what you want.

Say thank you.

Try again.

Even loving people asked something from him because we were desperate to reach him.

Frank had asked for nothing.

He had simply made room.

I told him that.

He shook his head immediately.

“Don’t make me into something I’m not.”

“I’m not.”

“I’ve done things.”

His eyes flicked toward the faded tattoo beneath his eye.

I knew better than to ask.

“I’m not saying you’re a saint,” I said.

He almost smiled at that.

“Definitely ain’t.”

“I’m saying you understood my son.”

Frank looked across the yard again.

At exactly 3:47, Caleb appeared at the fence.

For the first time, there was no motorcycle in the open garage because Frank was still beside me.

Caleb looked toward the porch.

Then toward the closed gate.

Then back at Frank.

Frank slowly stood.

He placed the photograph in his shirt pocket and walked toward the garage.

Caleb followed him with his eyes.

Frank rolled the door open.

The Road King waited inside.

He opened the gate.
