“I was helping.”
“With what?”
“The wedding.”
“My wedding dress was already finished,” I said.
She looked at me as though my speaking were the offensive thing happening in the room.
“I was told there was a problem with it.”
“By whom?”
She hesitated.
Madison shifted beside her.
That tiny movement caught Daniel’s attention.
He turned toward Madison.
“Did you know about this?”
“No.”
Her answer came too quickly.
Vivian immediately said, “Leave Madison out of it.”
Daniel stared at them both.
I still hadn’t shown the most important thing in the folder.
Two weeks earlier, when the salon called me to ask why I needed my completed gown released so urgently, I had told the manager I had authorized no pickup at all.
That conversation was why I began documenting everything.
The salon preserved its security footage.
I had watched it three days later.
I had watched Vivian enter the shop.
I had watched her speak with the desk staff.
I had watched her leave carrying my garment bag.
And I had watched Madison hold the door open for her.
I handed Daniel my phone.
“The salon has cameras.”
Madison stood up.
“I was just giving her a ride.”
Again, nobody had accused her yet.
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, his expression hurt more than anything Vivian had done to me.
Madison seemed to realize the same thing.
She lowered herself back into the pew.
Vivian recovered faster.
“This is ridiculous.
I was protecting my son from a mistake.”
There it was.
Not denial anymore.
Justification.
The room seemed to contract around us.
Daniel spoke quietly.
“What mistake?”
Vivian looked directly at me.
“This.”
She gestured at the clown costume.
Not at what she had done.
At me.
“This entire marriage.
This woman has never belonged in our family.
Everyone knows it.
People have simply been too polite to say so.”
My chest tightened.
I had imagined this confrontation in a dozen different ways since the salon first called me.
In none of them had I expected her to say the ugliest part out loud in front of Daniel.
Maybe cruelty makes people careless when they believe everyone secretly agrees with them.
