“She bought it before we married.
She paid for it.
I asked her to keep it in her name.”
Gloria blinked.
For months, she had built her plan on the belief that Daniel owned half the property and could be pressured into surrendering it later.
The transfer documents assumed I would be frightened enough not to question their language.
I turned to the page containing the property description.
“They also used the wrong parcel number,” I said.
“The number belongs to an empty lot two counties away.”
Marcus stared at the document.
Tessa whispered, “You said the attorney checked it.”
“There was no attorney,” I said.
“The letterhead belongs to a firm that closed six years ago.”
The forged documents had not merely failed.
They had connected Marcus to another fraud.
He twisted against the officer’s grip.
“This was her idea,” he said, nodding at Gloria.
“She said Daniel would never press charges against his mother.”
Gloria slapped him.
The sound was nearly identical to the slap she had given me.
The officer caught her wrist before she could strike again.
“Enough.”
Tessa backed toward the hallway.
“I’m changing clothes.”
“You’re staying here,” the second officer said.
“This robe is not evidence.”
“It was taken from my bedroom without permission,” I said.
“The brooch was inside a locked jewelry box.”
Tessa covered the brooch with her hand.
The officer asked her to remove it and place it on the table.
When she did, a small key fell from the robe pocket.
It was the spare key to my home safe.
Daniel recognized it.
“How did you get that?”
Tessa began to cry.
Not quietly.
She folded against the wall and sobbed that Marcus had forced her, Gloria had pressured her, and I had always made her feel poor.
Agent Ortiz waited until the performance ran out of breath.
“Where is the property taken from the safe?”
Tessa stopped crying.
I had discovered the missing key that morning.
The safe contained copies of deeds, insurance records, and a small velvet box of jewelry inherited from my grandmother.
I had moved the original financial documents weeks earlier, but I left harmless copies in place and photographed everything.
Tessa’s tote bag sat beside the stairs.
With her consent withheld, the officers did not search it immediately.
Instead, they secured it while another officer began the process required to examine it lawfully.
Tessa watched the bag as if it were breathing.
Agent Ortiz then informed Marcus that investigators had already obtained authority to seize his electronic devices and records connected to the fraudulent loan.
Local officers arrested him for the assault-related threats they had heard and for attempting to interfere with evidence.
When the handcuffs closed, he looked at Daniel.
“You’re choosing her over blood.”
Daniel’s answer was quiet.
“I’m choosing the person you harmed over the people who harmed her.”
Gloria’s shoulders sagged, but sympathy never appeared in her face.
“You will regret humiliating your mother.”
Daniel looked at the pearls on the floor.
