“I was trying to solve a financial problem.”
“Whose?”
He didn’t answer.
Mara did.
“Not Chloe’s.”
His head snapped toward her.
“This is a family matter.”
“Then it should be easy to explain within the family.”
Kyle tossed his keys onto the counter.
“You have no idea what’s happening.”
“Then explain it,” I said.
He paced once across the kitchen.
“I was going to put the money somewhere safe temporarily.”
“Three million dollars?”
“Yes.”
“From my father’s farm?”
“He has land.
You have a career.

“You wrote that I was being investigated over company money.”
Kyle stepped toward me.
“Give me the phone.”
Mara moved between us before he reached me.
She didn’t touch him.
She didn’t need to.
“Don’t,” she said.
Kyle stopped.
For the first time since entering the house, his confidence cracked.
“Are you threatening me?”
“No.
I’m preventing you from making another bad decision.”
Susan suddenly began talking.
“This has gone far enough.
Norman signed the papers.
Nobody forced him.
Kyle told us he was helping Chloe.
That’s all I knew.”
Kyle turned toward his mother.
“You knew exactly what I was doing.”
Susan’s face collapsed.
There it was.
Not the whole truth.
But enough to destroy the story she had just invented.
Heather whispered, “Oh my God.”
Susan pointed at Kyle.
“Don’t you dare put this on me.
