The patrol officer asked for identification.
Caleb’s wallet was still inside his pants, which remained in my arms.
I removed the wallet and placed it on the outdoor counter without handing it directly to him.
His truck key fob was still at the bottom of the pool.
“Was that necessary?” he asked through clenched teeth.
“No,” I said.
“Neither was any of this.”
Mark looked at me then, not with anger, but with a question he could barely bring himself to ask.
“How long?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Vanessa answered too quickly.
“Today was the first time.”
Caleb nodded.
“Exactly.”
Their timing was almost perfect.
Almost.
I looked toward the camera mounted beneath the patio roof.
A tiny green light remained steady beneath the lens.
When the security company installed the system, Caleb had refused to learn how it worked.
He complained about the monthly fee, mocked the motion alerts, and said no one would ever bother stealing from a house with an eighteen-thousand-dollar pool and a six-foot fence.
He knew cameras existed.
He did not know the system automatically saved clips whenever the gate opened or movement occurred near the pool.
He also did not know I had expanded the cloud archive after the side gate began appearing unlatched.
The patrol officer followed my gaze.
“Does that camera record?”
“Yes.”
Caleb’s face changed again.
Not dramatically.
Just a slight tightening around his mouth and a pause before his next breath.
Mark noticed.
“So we can check,” Mark said.
Vanessa reached for the pool steps.
“Mark, we should talk at home.”
“No.” His voice remained level.
“We should talk where the truth is.”
She climbed out wrapped in a towel, keeping her back to the neighbors.
I turned away while she put on her sundress.
The officer asked the people at the fence to give us space, and most of them retreated, though garage doors remained open and silhouettes stayed behind windows.
The scandal had already escaped the yard.
The neighborhood alert had given everyone an address.
The siren had supplied the reason to look.
Caleb and Vanessa had supplied the rest.
I opened the security application on my phone and entered the archive.
The most recent clip appeared first.
At 5:18 p.m., the side gate opened.
Vanessa entered wearing her sundress and carrying a tote bag.
Caleb met her halfway across the patio.
He kissed her before the gate finished closing.
No explanation survived that image.
Vanessa turned toward Mark.
He did not look at her.
Caleb stepped out of the pool with a towel around his waist.
“Marissa, you don’t need to show everyone.”
“I’m showing the officer and Mark.”
“You’re enjoying this.”
I looked at him.
