Instead, she called me selfish, ungrateful, cold, and obsessed with money.
Then she made the mistake that gave the detective their exact return schedule.
“You had better calm down before Thursday,” she said.
“Our flight lands at six fourteen, and you are picking us up because the return tickets are on your card too.”
I wrote down the flight number.
The detective contacted airport authorities.
He warned me that the investigation would not be resolved in a dramatic five-minute confrontation.
They needed statements, records, merchant evidence, and proof of intent.
My family might be questioned and released while the case was reviewed.
I understood.
I did not need instant punishment.
I needed the theft documented before my mother could rewrite it as generosity.
At the airport, the detective asked my mother whether she had the gold card.
She hesitated.
Chloe looked at her.
My father stared at the floor.
“Mrs.
Mitchell?” the detective repeated.
My mother reached into her purse and removed my card.
She held it between two fingers as though it were an ordinary object she had accidentally forgotten to return.
“There,” she said.
“No one was hiding it.”
The detective placed it into an evidence envelope.
“How did you obtain this?”
“Lauren gave it to me.”
“No, I didn’t,” I said.
My mother turned toward me with a warning in her eyes.
It was the same look she had used when I was a child and she wanted me to agree with her version of an event.
“Think carefully,” she said.
“You told me I could use it for emergencies.”
“A vacation is not an emergency.”
“So you admit I had permission.”
“I said you could call me if there was an emergency.
I never gave you the card.”
Chloe suddenly spoke.
“Mom said Lauren wouldn’t care.”
My mother spun around.
“Be quiet.”
The detective looked at Chloe.
“Did your sister give you permission to use the account?”
Chloe’s mouth opened, but nothing came out.
My mother answered for her.
“She did not personally buy anything.”
Chloe stared at her.
“You told me to add the card to my phone.”
The terminal seemed to become quieter around us.
My mother’s face tightened.
“You are confused.”
“No, I’m not.” Chloe’s voice trembled.
“You took the card from Lauren’s apartment.
You said she owed us.”
My father closed his eyes.
The detective asked each of them to come with the officers to a private interview area.
My mother immediately reached for my arm.
“Tell them to stop this.”
I stepped back before she could touch me.
