Chapter 3 — My Family Skipped My Son’s Surgery, Then My Bank Manager Called

4.9Editorial score

I looked toward the ceiling.

“Caleb asked if you were lost.”

She stopped talking.

“At 5:58 in the morning,” I continued.

“He asked if his grandmother was lost.

Then, when they rolled him toward surgery, he asked me to tell Vanessa he wasn’t scared.”

Patricia said my name in a warning tone.

I did not let her finish.

“Three days later, you asked me for five thousand dollars.”

“For your sister.”

“I know who the dress was for.”

“Then why are you acting like this?”

That question ended something.

Not dramatically.

There was no screaming.

No triumphant speech.

I simply stopped needing her to understand.

“You no longer have access to my accounts,” I said.

“Vanessa no longer has access to my cards.

I’m reviewing every charge and every recurring payment.

Anything that belongs to you is now your responsibility.”

Patricia’s breathing changed.

“You can’t do that to family.”

“I already did.”

She hung up.

Vanessa called less than a minute later.

I knew Mom had gone straight to her.

“Are you seriously doing this over one hospital visit?” Vanessa asked.

One hospital visit.

I glanced at Caleb.

His eyes were closed, but I lowered my voice anyway.

“You mean your nephew’s heart surgery?”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.

I don’t think I do anymore.”

She exhaled loudly.

“I have a wedding to pay for.

Mom said you froze everything.”

“I froze my money.”

“You’ve always helped us.”

“Yes.”

She seemed confused by how calmly I agreed.

“So why stop now?”

I could have listed every charge.

Every rent shortfall.

Every phone bill.

Every time she promised to pay me back and then behaved as though mentioning it was an insult.

But the answer had become much simpler.

“Because Caleb needed you once,” I said.

“And you didn’t show up.”

Her response came instantly.

“That has nothing to do with money.”

I felt something inside me go completely still.

“Exactly.”

She did not understand what I meant.

That was fine.
