Chapter 3 — My Family Laughed at My Help—Until I Opened the Folder

4.9Editorial score

Nobody saw the mornings I left before Lily woke up.

Nobody saw me answering logistics calls from the car outside her dance class because a shipment had gone missing three states away.

Nobody sat beside me after midnight when I checked my account, moved money from savings, and calculated whether helping Rachel meant postponing something Lily needed.

They saw the result.

A payment cleared.

A problem disappeared.

Then life continued.

Rachel pushed her chair back slightly.

“Fine,” she said.

“Stop paying my stuff.

I don’t care.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

Something about my immediate agreement irritated her more than an argument would have.

“I mean it.”

“I believe you.”

“I can handle myself.”

“Good.”

Her eyes narrowed.

My aunt covered her mouth, pretending to cough.

Rachel noticed.

“What?” she snapped.

My aunt shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“No, say it.”

My aunt glanced at me, then back at Rachel.

“I’m just wondering why you’re angry if this changes nothing.”

Rachel’s face reddened.

“It doesn’t.”

“Then there’s no problem.”

Rachel looked around the table for support.

She found less than she expected.

Mom was twisting a napkin between her fingers.

Dad stared at the grill.

The laughter from ten minutes earlier had vanished so completely it felt embarrassing to remember it.

Rachel grabbed her phone.

“Whatever.

Tyler and I are leaving.”

She stood.

Then she froze.

Her thumb moved across the screen.

I knew what she had remembered.

Her car.

Three weeks earlier, the alternator had failed.

She couldn’t afford the repair and needed the car for work, so I had paid the shop directly.

She had promised to repay me slowly.

She hadn’t made the first payment yet.

Her eyes flicked toward me.

“The car repair wasn’t a gift,” I said quietly.

“I know.”

“I’m not demanding it today.”

“Good.”

“But we’ll make a repayment plan.”

Her mouth fell open.

“A repayment plan?”

“Yes.”
