Chapter 4 — My Family Dressed Me to Fail—Then the CEO Opened Another Folder

4.9Editorial score

The beige jacket lay folded on the passenger seat.

My phone buzzed before I reached the bridge.

Vanessa.

Then my mother.

Then Vanessa again.

I did not answer while driving.

When I pulled into the driveway, Vanessa was waiting near the front window with her phone in her hand.

My mother came into the hallway as soon as I opened the door.

Her eyes landed on the charcoal blazer.

“Where did you get that?”

I closed the door behind me.

“The CEO lent it to me.”

Vanessa laughed from the stairs.

“The CEO lent you her clothes?”

“Yes.”

My mother’s face tightened.

“Well, don’t get comfortable.

You’ll need to return it after they call and tell you they went with someone more qualified.”

I set my folder on the entry table.

Vanessa angled her phone toward me again.

“So? How badly did it go?”

I looked at the lens.

For years, I had defended myself too quickly around them.

Every accusation became a trial.

Every insult became something I tried to disprove before they finished saying it.

That day I finally understood how much power there was in not rushing.

“It went fine.”

My father appeared from the kitchen.

“Fine doesn’t mean hired.”

“No.”

He folded his arms.

“What did they offer?”

My mother looked at him.

Vanessa lowered her phone by an inch.

I hadn’t said they offered anything.

I watched my father realize that.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“What do you mean?” my mother asked.

I picked up my folder again.

“I need to go to the bank.”

My father stepped forward.

“Why?”

“I’m opening a new account.”

Silence.

His voice turned sharper.

“You already have an account.”

“I have an account you control.”

“It’s for your own protection.”

I almost smiled at the phrase.

There it was.

Help.

Protection.

Guidance.
