Chapter 2 — My Daughter’s Hospital Director Husband Scheduled the C-Section She Feared

4.9Editorial score

Carter, move away from Mrs.

Carter.”

Ryan laughed once, without humor.

“You’re going to arrest a hospital director based on a frightened pregnant woman’s story and a misunderstood recording?”

I watched Emily absorb the words.

A frightened pregnant woman.

He said it as though fear made her unreliable instead of proving what he had done to her.

I squeezed her hand.

“The bruises need to be documented,” I told Dana.

Emily immediately shook her head.

“No pictures.

Ryan will find them.”

“He won’t control the file,” Dana said gently.

“A forensic nurse from another hospital is already on the way.

Nothing will be stored on this system.”

Ryan looked at me then.

Not at Dana.

Not at the detective.

At me.

“You did this.”

“You did this,” I answered.

“I made sure people could see it.”

His voice dropped.

“You have no idea what you’ve started.”

The threat was quiet, but Detective Cole heard it.

She took another step toward him.

“Keep talking.”

Ryan lifted both hands, suddenly calm again.

“I’m being provoked.

I have patients waiting and an institution to run.

Martin, end this spectacle.”

The board chairman stared at the forged consent form on the tablet.

“Effective immediately,” Martin said, “your administrative authority is suspended.

Your credentials are temporarily restricted pending investigation.

You are not to access any patient, employee, record, or hospital system.”

Ryan blinked.

“You can’t suspend me without a board vote.”

“The emergency bylaws allow it when patient safety is at risk.

You wrote them yourself.”

That landed harder than a shout.

Ryan had built the rule he believed would protect his power.

Now it was closing around him.

He turned toward the door.

Detective Cole blocked his path.

“I’m leaving voluntarily,” he said.

“No,” she replied.

“You’re remaining here while we determine whether Mrs.

Carter is in immediate danger.”

Emily’s grip tightened until her fingernails pressed into my skin.

“He has a gun at home,” she whispered.

The room changed again.

Detective Cole reached for her radio.

“Where is it kept?”

“A safe in his office.

Sometimes in his car.”

Ryan spun toward her.
