Liam’s voice came through my phone speaker with brutal clarity.
“And while I had it…
I emptied the account.”
Nobody moved.
A few seconds earlier, my brother had been smiling as he threw my belongings into freezing rain.
Brittany had been laughing beside him.
My father had threatened to call the police if I didn’t leave.
My mother had treated the disappearance of my $42,000 as if it were a clever family budgeting decision.
Now Liam was staring at my phone.
“Turn that off.”
I didn’t.
The recording continued.
My own voice came next, strained and exhausted: “That was my tuition money.”
Then Dad’s answer filled the kitchen.
“You’ve lived here for two years.
Consider it back rent.”
Mom’s laugh followed.
Liam lunged toward me.
I stepped backward and locked my phone.
“Delete it,” he said.
That was the first moment I saw fear replace smugness on his face.
Not much fear.
Not yet.
He still believed he controlled the situation.
“It’s our camera,” Dad snapped.
“Anything recorded inside my house belongs to me.”
I looked at him.
“Then you should be glad it’s working so well.”
Brittany slowly removed herself from Liam’s arm.
Mom put her beer down.
Liam recovered first.
He gave an exaggerated laugh and looked around the kitchen as though everyone else was supposed to join him.
“So what? I said I took money.
Big deal.
She owes us money.”
“I never agreed to pay you $42,000.”
Dad pointed at the door again.
“You lived under our roof.”
“And I paid for groceries.
Utilities.
Repairs.
I gave Mom money when the property tax bill was short.
None of that gave Liam permission to steal my ATM card.”
“Stop calling it stealing,” Mom said.
“He’s your brother.”
That sentence told me more than anything else had.
They genuinely believed being family changed the definition of what Liam had done.
I looked at the wet suitcase on the porch and the black trash bags slowly collecting rainwater.
I could have screamed.
Instead, I took screenshots of my account balance and the recent withdrawals.
Then I sent the security footage to myself.
Dad noticed.
“What are you doing?”
“Making sure the recording doesn’t disappear.”
Liam’s jaw tightened.
For the first time, Brittany spoke without laughing.
