Chapter 4 — I Paid My Dead Mother-in-Law Until a Child Opened the Door

4.9Editorial score

“You should have told me about my child.”

“I know.”

Every answer made me angrier because she was not fighting me.

There was no villain speech.

No clever excuse.

Just years of decisions stacked on top of one cowardly choice.

Then I remembered why I had driven there in the first place.

“The money.”

Mia wiped her cheek.

“Mom used it while she was alive.”

“For two years.”

“Yes.”

“And after she died?”

Mia hesitated.

“I kept the account active.”

“You stole from me.”

Her jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“Every month.”

“Yes.”

“While texting me as your dead mother.”

“Yes.”

The rain intensified against the roof.

I pulled the folder from inside my jacket.

The diner owner had let me take copies of the documents after I promised I would return them.

I held up my old passport photograph.

“You used my identification.”

“Mom already had it.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Mia looked at the paper.

“Yes.”

I felt something inside me settle.

Not forgiveness.

Something colder.

Clarity.

For years I had blamed myself for surviving.

I had replayed our last conversation, searching for something cruel I might have said.

I had wondered whether she died angry at me.

Whether I had missed a sign.

Whether I had failed her somehow.

Now the truth was standing on a porch admitting that grief had been built for me deliberately.

“I want a DNA test.”

Mia’s head snapped up.

“She’s yours.”

“Then the test won’t hurt you.”

Fear moved across her face.

“You can’t just come here and take her.”

“I didn’t say I would.”

“You’re thinking it.”

“I’m thinking I’m her father and I didn’t know she existed until fifteen minutes ago.”

Mia stepped closer.

“Ryan, she has a life.”

“So did I.”

She stopped.

That was the first time the anger reached her completely.

I continued, quieter now.
