Chapter 6 — I Married Don Armando for Money—Then I Saw His Face Come Off

“No more tests.”

“No more disguises.”

“Never again.”

“And if I ask a question, you answer it honestly.”

“Yes.”

She walked to the same chair where she had once sat opposite Don Armando and studied a hand that did not seem to belong to an old man.

Now the hand matched the face.

For the first time since the wedding, she knew exactly who was sitting across from her.

That did not magically create love.

Trust did not return because Ethan was young or handsome.

The hurt did not disappear because his intentions had not been entirely selfish.

They had to begin again without costumes and without desperate bargains pretending to be something else.

Ethan continued supporting the medical care he had promised.

Ella’s brother returned to school.

Her mother gradually had the treatment she had once been unable to afford.

But Ella also began making decisions for herself rather than treating the marriage as payment for those things.

She spoke when she was angry.

She questioned Ethan when she doubted him.

And Ethan, who had once watched her every gesture to discover her value, was forced to do something much harder: let her examine his.

One evening, weeks later, they stood on the same terrace where she had discovered the truth.

Ethan looked toward the garden.

“Do you regret marrying me?”

Ella considered the question.

“I regret marrying a man I didn’t know.”

He accepted that quietly.

Then she added, “But now I have the chance to decide whether I want to know the real one.”

Ethan turned toward her.

There was no mask between them this time.

Ella thought of the girl who had walked down the aisle believing her freedom was the price of saving her family.

She no longer felt like that girl.

Money had solved problems that love alone could not solve.

It had paid for medicine.

It had reopened a classroom door for her brother.

Pretending otherwise would have been dishonest.

But money could not decide whether a marriage deserved to survive.

Only truth could begin answering that.

Ella reached for Ethan’s hand—not because he was the wealthy CEO hidden beneath Don Armando, and not because she owed him gratitude.

She took it because, for the first time, the choice belonged entirely to her.

And that was the moment she finally understood why she had cried when the mask came off.

She had thought she was discovering who her husband really was.

In truth, she was also discovering that she was allowed to become more than the desperate young woman who had married him for money.
