Chapter 6 — His Son Wouldn’t Wake—Then Ethan Recognized the Name in the Folder

4.9Editorial score

The building had reopened after remediation under new community oversight.

Adrian moved carefully, still rebuilding strength, but insisted on walking without Ethan holding his arm.

Inside the learning center, several younger children rushed toward him.

Ethan stepped aside.

For years he had believed protecting his son meant knowing where he was, paying for the best schools, choosing the safest neighborhoods, and removing uncertainty wherever possible.

Adrian had taught him something harder.

Protection also meant listening to people whose problems never reached the top floor.

It meant understanding that numbers behaved logically only when the humans entering them told the truth.

Before they left, Adrian stopped beside the rattling window where the old fan had once stood.

“You really didn’t know I came here?” he asked.

Ethan smiled faintly.

“No.”

“I thought you knew everything.”

“So did I.”

Adrian smiled for the first time that day.

Outside, evening settled between the brick buildings.

Farther away, the glass towers of the financial district caught the last light.

Ethan once would have looked at those towers and seen everything he had built.

Now he looked at his son walking beside him.

The distance between those two worlds no longer felt abstract.

He knew exactly what could disappear inside it.

And he knew exactly why he could never allow himself to stop looking again.
