Chapter 1 — His Secretary Slapped His Wife—Then She Opened the Ownership Folder

4.9Editorial score

Adrian stared at the first page inside my folder as if the floor beneath him had suddenly disappeared.

Vanessa noticed.

Her confidence faltered for the first time that morning.

“What is that?” she asked.

I kept the folder open but didn’t turn it toward her yet.

The first page was not dramatic.

No accusation.

No photograph.

No secret love letter.

It was a current ownership certification for Bennett Meridian Group.

Hail Family Trust: fifty-one percent.

The same trust whose investment had kept Adrian’s company alive when banks stopped returning his calls twelve years earlier.

The same trust whose investment committee I chaired.

The same trust Adrian apparently assumed would remain quiet forever because his wife had spent years allowing him to be the public face of the business.

One of the security guards looked from Adrian to me.

“Mr.

Bennett?” he asked cautiously.

Adrian recovered enough to straighten his jacket.

“This is a private family matter.”

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

“Family?”

There it was.

That single word did more damage than the slap.

She looked at me, then at Adrian.

“What does she mean, Claire?”

Adrian didn’t answer her.

So I did.

“I’m Claire Bennett.”

The coffee pot behind us clicked as its warmer switched off.

Vanessa stared at my face.

Then at Adrian.

Then at the bracelet on her own wrist.

For the first time since I had met her, she looked uncertain.

“No,” she said.

It came out almost as a whisper.

Adrian stepped toward me.

“Claire, we should talk in my office.”

“We are talking.”

“Not here.”

I glanced at the employees gathered around us.

“Why? Because witnesses suddenly bother you?”

His eyes flicked toward the security camera.

Vanessa found her voice again.

“She told me she was temporary staff.

She was using your things.

She was taking photographs.

I was protecting the executive floor.”

I touched the side of my face where her palm had landed.

“With this?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She was being insubordinate.”

One of the guards shifted uncomfortably.

I looked at him.

“Please preserve the pantry footage from this morning.”

Vanessa immediately said, “I told you, that camera isn’t working.”

The guard hesitated.
