The room looked smaller now.

Mara waited downstairs with Claire’s daughter.

Claire opened a drawer and found an old photograph from her wedding day.

Her father stood beside Danny in the picture, fastening the Rolex around his wrist.

Claire touched the watch she now wore beneath her sleeve.

For a moment, grief rose unexpectedly—not for the husband she had lost, but for the woman in the photograph who believed love and vigilance could never need to occupy the same marriage.

Then her daughter cried downstairs.

Claire put the photograph back.

She took one last look at the bedroom and closed the door without slamming it.

Outside, her daughter quieted as soon as Claire lifted her.

Mara glanced at the single box in Claire’s hand.

“That’s all?”

Claire looked back at the brownstone.

Once, she had thought leaving meant abandoning her life.

Now she understood that most of what mattered had left with her that November afternoon: her child, her father’s watch, the evidence she trusted herself enough to preserve, and the part of her that had finally stopped accepting someone else’s explanation of what she could plainly see.

“That’s all,” Claire said.

Then she carried her daughter to the car and drove away.
