She considered that.

Then she closed the final box.

“You spent a long time believing that note was the day everything fell apart.”

Sebastian said nothing.

Claire lifted the box.

“It wasn’t.”

He looked at her.

“It was the day I stopped pretending it hadn’t already happened.”

Sebastian lowered his eyes.

Claire carried the box toward the hall.

He moved aside for her.

That small movement contained more respect than many of the grand gestures he had once used in place of attention.

At the front door, Claire paused.

Audrey was waiting downstairs with Diana.

A new apartment waited across town.

Her work was beginning again.

Her body was healing.

Her daughter knew nothing yet of betrayal, wealth, hotels, attorneys, or gray folders.

Claire intended to keep it that way for as long as childhood allowed.

Sebastian stood several feet behind her.

He had lost the version of his life he once assumed could never leave him.

Claire had lost one too.

The difference was that she no longer mistook loss for destruction.

She opened the door.

For months, everyone around Sebastian Harrow had believed power meant being the person no one could walk away from.

Claire had discovered something quieter.

Sometimes power was simply knowing when to go.

She stepped into the hallway, and this time, when the door closed behind her, she was not disappearing.

She was leaving on her own terms.
