Lucas pressed the button.

For half a second, nothing happened.

Then a faint hiss came through the recorder’s tiny speaker.

Daniel’s chair scraped against the floor.

“Your Honor, I have no idea where he got that.”

The judge lifted one hand without looking at him.

“Mr.

Carter, sit down.”

Daniel remained standing for another second, his face pale beneath the courtroom lights.

Then he lowered himself into his chair.

Lucas kept both hands on the wooden rail.

The recording began with the sound of a car door closing.

Then Daniel’s voice filled the silent courtroom.

“Listen to me carefully, Lucas.”

Emily stopped breathing.

The voice was unmistakable.

Daniel continued.

“When the judge asks where you feel safe, you tell her your mother scares you.

You tell her she cries all the time.

You tell her she yells.”

There was a pause on the recording.

Then Lucas’s younger voice.

“But she doesn’t.”

Someone in the back of the courtroom shifted.

Daniel stared at the recorder as if he could silence it by looking hard enough.

His recorded voice became colder.

“This is not a game.”

“I know.”

“Then do what I told you.”

Another pause.

Lucas asked, “What if I don’t?”

Daniel’s jaw tightened in the courtroom before the answer even came from the speaker.

“Then maybe Mason needs a school where he can learn some independence.

Somewhere away from all this.

And you might not get to see him as much.”

Mason made a small sound behind his brother.

Emily turned toward him.

His face had gone white.

On the recorder, Lucas whispered, “You said we wouldn’t be separated.”

“I said that depended on you helping me.”

The recording stopped.

No one spoke.

Emily looked at Daniel.

For months, he had insisted that the boys preferred his home.

He had told relatives they were frightened by Emily’s moods.

His lawyer had repeated concerns about emotional instability that Emily could never trace to anything real.

Now she understood why Lucas had become so watchful.

He had not been hiding his feelings from her.

He had been protecting Mason.

The judge looked at Lucas.

“Is there more?”

Lucas nodded.

Daniel’s lawyer finally spoke.

“Your Honor, before anything further is played, we need to establish when this was recorded, whether it has been altered, and the circumstances surrounding it.”

Her voice remained professional, but the confidence from twenty minutes earlier had disappeared.

The judge agreed that the recording would need proper consideration.
