I looked at my daughter.
There are moments when a parent realizes that protection and deception have become the same thing.
This was mine.
“Before you were born,” I said, “Daniel and I were together.”
Iris blinked.
“Together how?”
“We loved each other.”
Ryan looked down.
Iris didn’t.
“And?”
I could hear footsteps approaching outside.
“And when I found out I was pregnant, everything changed.”
Iris’s face tightened.
“With me?”
“Yes.”
The knock came before I could say anything else.
Three quiet knocks.
No one moved.
Then Ryan walked to the door and opened it.
Daniel stood on the porch.
He was older, of course.
Gray at his temples.
Broader through the shoulders.
But I recognized the way he held himself when he was afraid—too straight, as though posture could keep emotion from showing.
His eyes found mine first.
Then Iris.
He stopped breathing for a second.
I saw it happen.
Iris saw it too.
Daniel whispered, “Oh, God.”
Ryan stepped aside.
Daniel entered the house slowly.
Iris wrapped her arms around herself.
“Do you know who I am?”
Daniel looked at me.
I didn’t rescue him.
He looked back at Iris.
“I think I do.”
Her chin trembled.
“Think?”
Daniel shut his eyes briefly.
“Iris, I didn’t know about you.”
She turned on me so quickly that the skirt of her dress twisted around her legs.
“What does that mean?”
I forced the words out.
“Daniel is your father.”
Ryan sat down hard in the nearest chair.
Iris didn’t move.
For several seconds, she simply stared at me.
Then she looked at Ryan.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Ryan’s dad?”
My throat tightened.
“Yes.”
The horror that crossed her face made me understand immediately where her mind had gone.
