Chapter 3 — Her Groom Expected a Bride—Her Sister Brought His Recorded Secret

4.9Editorial score

Two women who had previously accepted confidential settlements gave statements describing Julian’s violence and Harrison’s efforts to silence them.

Lily was not the first.

She was the first whose evidence connected the son’s abuse to the father’s financial machinery.

Harrison reached for the ledger.

The investigator moved it beyond his grasp.

“You will have access through counsel.”

“This is privileged corporate material.”

“It was produced pursuant to lawful process.”

One of Harrison’s attorneys whispered in his ear.

Harrison turned on him.

“You told me this was contained.”

The attorney glanced at the watching guests.

“Sir, this is not the place.”

“Fix it.”

“I cannot fix a federal inquiry in the middle of a chapel.”

Several guests shifted away from Harrison as though scandal were contagious.

He saw them move.

His entire life had been built around rooms leaning toward him.

Now the room was pulling back.

Julian lunged toward Lily’s phone.

I stepped aside.

The lead investigator caught his wrist before he reached me.

“Do not touch the evidence.”

Julian jerked free.

“You cannot arrest me because my fiancée bruises easily.”

My mother covered her mouth.

Our father stared at him with naked disgust.

I kept my voice level.

“The marks were not bruises.”

Julian’s eyes flicked toward me.

That one glance was enough.

He knew exactly which marks I meant.

The investigator asked, “Would you like to clarify that statement?”

Julian looked toward Harrison.

His father gave him a warning stare, but panic had already outrun discipline.

“She provoked me,” Julian said.

“She threatened to embarrass me in front of the board.

She knew what was at stake.”

A woman near the aisle began to cry.

She was one of Lily’s college friends, someone who had spent the previous evening arranging flowers and praising the groom’s devotion.

Julian heard her and became angry.

“Oh, spare me.

Every marriage has private moments.

Lily understood the rules.”

“There were rules?” the investigator asked.

Harrison stepped forward.

“My son will say nothing further.”

Julian rounded on him.

“You said she would never talk.”

The chapel seemed to contract.

Harrison’s face emptied.

Julian continued, louder now.

“You said the debt would keep all of them quiet.

You said Eleanor was irrelevant.”

His father slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.
