Richard yanked his arm free.
Victoria’s voice came from behind me.
“He can’t.”
Richard turned.
She held a secure phone she had taken from the cabinet.
“I just suspended your executive access.”
His confidence finally cracked.
“You can’t do that unilaterally.”
“I can suspend access pending a security investigation when I have evidence an officer attempted to obtain my authorization under coercion.”
“That recording proves nothing.”
“Then you won’t mind the board hearing it.”
His face changed.
Victoria tapped the phone.
“And outside counsel.”
Another tap.
“And the police.”
Richard moved toward her.
I stepped in front of him again.
This time he didn’t threaten my job.
He threatened the truth.
“No one is going to believe the version of events told by a frightened woman and a janitor.”
I almost laughed.
Facilities Coordinator, technically.
But Victoria didn’t smile.
She simply restarted the recording.
Richard’s own voice filled the room.
“Sign the authorization, Victoria.”
“No.”
“You don’t have a choice.”
Richard went completely still.
The recording continued.
Victoria said, “If I refuse?”
Richard answered, “Security already knows you’re drunk.
Your driver knows you’re not to leave without me.
By morning, everyone will remember exactly what I need them to remember.”
No one spoke in the penthouse after that.
The arrogance in his recorded voice was worse than shouting.
He had believed the outcome was already decided.
Richard finally said, “Turn it off.”
Victoria didn’t.
The recording captured the scrape of furniture, her demand that he release her, and the sound of her breaking away.
Then came running footsteps.
An elevator chime.
And, several seconds later, Victoria’s distant voice saying something I recognized instantly.
“Take me home right now, David… or you’re fired.”
My own startled voice followed.
The device had recorded everything.
Including the moment Richard’s prepared story collided with an employee he hadn’t prepared for.
Richard sat down.
Not because anyone told him to.
Because his legs seemed to decide for him.
The authorities arrived not long afterward.
Victoria did not dramatize what happened, and neither did I.
She gave them the recording, the folder, her torn dress, and a plain account of the night.
She also agreed to medical testing.
That mattered.
