Adrian looked at me as though I had personally designed every clause to humiliate him.
I had not.
My father had simply understood a truth I refused to see: a man who resented the hand that lifted him would eventually try to cut it off.
Vanessa moved toward the doorway.
One of the security officers blocked her path.
“I am leaving,” she said.
Mara glanced at the folder.
“Not until the police speak with everyone who witnessed the assault.”
Adrian gave a harsh laugh.
“There will be no police.
Elena will not press charges.”
He said it with the certainty of a man who had mistaken my restraint for obedience.
I lifted my eyes to him.
“Mrs.
Bell called them before I called my father.”
Adrian turned toward the household manager.
Mrs.
Bell stood straighter.
“The security system recorded every strike.
I triggered the silent alarm after the second one.”
The color drained from his face.
Vanessa whispered, “Recorded?”
At that moment, the large television across the hall switched on.
Mara had connected her tablet to the house system.
The screen showed a time stamp from earlier that afternoon.
Vanessa entered Adrian’s study carrying a medical envelope.
The guests watched as she closed the door behind her and placed the envelope on his desk.
On the recording, Adrian opened it and stared at the report.
“This name isn’t yours,” he said.
Vanessa leaned over the desk.
“No one will look closely.
Elena will be too devastated to question it.
Once she signs, we can announce the pregnancy properly.”
The real Vanessa in the hall went rigid.
On-screen, Adrian tapped the report against his palm.
“And if she refuses?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Make her afraid.”
No one looked away from the screen.
The video continued.
Adrian opened a drawer and removed the riding crop he kept as decoration from his equestrian club.
He tested it against his hand.
“She has nowhere to go,” he said.
“By midnight, she will sign anything I put in front of her.”
The recording ended.
Adrian’s lawyer, who had remained near the fireplace, stepped forward and placed the gray divorce folder on the table.
“I did not prepare these documents,” he said.
Adrian spun toward him.
“Be careful.”
“I am being careful.
The trust transfer page is not part of the divorce petition my office drafted.
Someone inserted it later.”
Mara took the page with gloved fingers.
“The metadata indicates it was created on Mr.
Vale’s personal computer,” she said.
“It attempts to transfer control of assets he was never entitled to possess.”
